Piece of Me, 2021, mixed media

Piece of Me is a collaborative, participatory art sculpture exploring what effect idealized body standards have on women and their body image. It alludes to the fact that this ideal can take us further away from who we are, and eat away at our self value. Participants were invited to eat the edible figure made from cake and rice krispie with only one suggestion: please take a piece of me. The video performance is now the artpiece, showing how viewers chose to mutilate and consume her.

Pop culture references for intimate and sexualized parts of our bodies can often feel dehumanizing and more often than not relate to consumption in some way. We are not meant to be consumed, we should not be made to feel as though we aren’t good enough with our natural bodies. Women are held to such unrealistic standards in terms of how our bodies are supposed to look. This is embedded in us from childhood. We know that Barbie as a real human with her anatomy would not be able to stand up, yet we are taught to idealize her form.
